The JRU is primarily focused on finding and addressing wrongful convictions. However, the JRU will also work on cases where an individual’s sentence is unjust.

The first cases the JRU will review are those related to the recent statutory change in Tenn. Code Ann. § 39-17-432. Tennessee’s General Assembly first reduced the boundary of drug free school zones from 1,000 feet to 500 feet. The next year, the legislature made that change allowing for a resentencing process for defendants who have received an enhanced punishment under the old statute. The JRU will review eligible cases after reviewing the available records and documents in the DA’s Office, and notify individuals and their attorneys of next steps if action is needed.
